Dean grew up in Winnetka, Illinois and has been with Perdomo since 1997. He got started in the cigar business somewhat by accident. He’d been acting as a rep in the housewares and gift industry for ten years and took on a leather-bound executive desk accessory line. Among the items in that line were a table lighter, an ashtray and a humidor – which sparked his decision to trade housewares for cigars.
“My passion for cigars goes back to my college days when I was on the golf team. One day I was playing a practice round and was having a bad front nine. One of my teammates gave me a cigar and said it would help me relax. I shot 4 under on the back nine and the rest, as they say, is history.”
Dean has been collecting lithographic advertising art for over 20 years, concentrating on cigar label art from 1860 to 1930. He also enjoys reading crime mysteries by his favorite authors, who include James Patterson, John Grisham, Michael Connelly, Harlan Corben and Stuart Woods.
“It’s hard to say which Perdomo cigar is my favorite, as I like them all. The ones I go to most often are the Champagne 10th Anniversary – it’s a great morning cigar, very smooth and creamy on the palate. I also like the Habano Maduro for its natural sweetness and flavor. It’s like Godiva chocolate. Recently, my go to cigar has been the Grand Cru Corojo Churchill. The balance and smooth fullness of flavor is amazing.”
“My favorite quote is one my dad used to say, ‘Be a first rate version of yourself not a second rate version of someone else’. Also, ‘You are only as successful as the ambition you put forth’ is a quote that I came up with from two quotes I heard years ago: ‘Ambition stands in no man’s way’ and ‘Success breeds success.’”
